Why is cursive important?

20 years of research finds that handwriting is the single most important factor accounting for success in written language skills. Handwriting is one of the most complex motor skills that the brain is capable of. Cursive compounds the benefits of handwriting by integrating visual tactile information with fine motor dexterity.
Cursive Instruction is Not Required in Schools
Since 2010, most US states adopted the Common Core State Standards, a national framework to prepare students. Their guidelines only required manuscript handwriting instruction until Grade 1, while cursive handwriting was excluded altogether. Many schools do not have incentive to teach handwriting since state tests don't assess on handwriting. Thus, many teachers will not teach cursive, and students are deprived of the opportunity to gain fluency in this skill.
